I have reviewed the latest draft and offer the following comments:
\n
\n- Overall, I continue to be impressed with the extent of the information aimed to be covered in the course. There is the potential for students to be quite well-informed and prepared to begin a career in our industry. Yay!
\n
\n- As per an earlier comment, I really feel a discussion and definitions of genre is important. This doesn't have to be a long section, but its necessary for context in a world where these lines are often blurred. One way to do this would be to have the students "shout out" 10 different types of screen-based media for example and then grouping them into fact vs fiction, series vs one offs, news vs entertainment or advertising. It would create a grand sense of how everything is connected, but different as well as generate unique examples of content that demonstrates how sometimes lines are crossed. Module 2 seemed an appropriate place to me, before you get into the phases of creation.
\n
\n- Module 7B, the audio mixing should culminate in the creation of a podcast or mp3- easily added on and an important format to include that isn't mentioned in the current course.
\n
\n- Module 8A, interactive media is rarely produced as a stand alone project anymore (see earlier comments) but as a compliment to an existing medium, company etc. A more well-rounded approach to teaching its creation, would be to have this project be an entension of the earlier projects completed - the audio project could now be placed on the web to complement a blog for example, or the video could now have a website created for promotion. Using this opportunity to build on what's been done before and get kids to think about extending one idea to many different mediums would be a valuable exercise. The study of an existing media property to breakdown all its communication components would also be a valuable illustration of this concept - ie: a tv series might have a website, facebook page, twitter feed, discussion forum, trailer, poster, book, video game and audio cd. Or how does the CBC collect and distribute news over multiple platforms.
\n
\n- Module 8B, b. - the notion of publicity here is great, but it would be valuable to ensure it extends to not just the creation of the message, but the methods of effectively releasing that message - ie: social media, websites, as well as traditional print, radio and television. The example of CBC above also works here.
\n
\n- Module 8B c, a discussion of modern communication with an audience needs to include the notion of allowing the audience to communicate back to you as well (see earlier notes on Interactive media module)
\n
\n\u2013 In the previous course, there was a greater emphasis on advertising. I think this is valuable to include and could be incorporated into the publicity section. Discussions of the new ways that content creators are working with advertisers and audiences where ads become part of the content itself would be very interesting and effective in illustrating the need to engage your audience. Ie: The Obama Campaign, Waking up Hannah.
\n
\n- Module 10, I love the inclusion of the responsibility of life-long learning. Its also an essential skill for survival in the industry. Where would the reporters of the 1980's be today if they hadn't learned how to use the internet after all?
\n
\n- Module 14 c, Shooting the script is quite an intensive discussion leading into pre-production and production. While I think this would be valuable, it seems odd to me to place it in the same section as writing the script without more elaboration and sections supporting this concept. I think it needs to be removed or expanded. Perhaps covered in the project creation stage.
\n
\nPlease let me know if any of these thoughts need further explaination and thanks again for the opportunity to assist!

\n
\nI would suggest that communication is central to all subject areas rather than highlighting the arts or literature.
\n
\nThe journal, portfolio, log concept is something that can be very useful for reflection and assessment. Production logs are an important organizational tool. A journal, if it is an ongoing reflection on the production process, can be invaluable for a teacher looking for insights and motivations regarding the final work (film, music recording, photographs, web designs etc).
\n
\nDo we need some kind of acknowledgement of the new media producers? \n
\nOne of the reasons I included eg's is that many teachers believe the indicator intent is clearer with some eg's. \nThe working draft of the new curriculum states: Communication Media 10, 20, 30 provides experiences for students to inquire while developing understandings, skills and abilities in audio, visual, and interactive media production to communicate effectively.

\nI like the idea of a name change as well, but 'Communication Media' has a kind of corporate feeling to it. Of course, that's just my opinion, and I'm kind of weird.
\n
\nDean's suggestion, 'New Media Communications', suggests internet based communications. Again, that's just my opinion and should be taken with a grain of salt.
\n
\nThe Saskatchewan Motion Picture Industry Association (SMPIA) struggled with this as well. They saw themselves as representing all media including film, television, sound, and interactive. There was debate as to whether the phrase 'Motion Picture' adequately represented all areas of the industry. In the end, we concluded that the phrase, while imperfect, did represent all media best, as other alternatives at the time seemed to skew too far towards one fringe or another.
\n
\nWhat do you think of something like 'Motion Picture Arts'? I think it works for interactive media as well as video production and the word 'Arts' gives it a heart.
